These notes do not provide the information given orally in lectures. Nor do they outline the lectures.
These notes are not designed to be used during the lecture. They are intended to be read before or after. They provide references and some additional information.

Figure is from Ling & Imas (2025). The x-axis is how much people think they themsevles or other students reply on LLMs. (What you see is that people report that they do not use them, or hardly use them, but that everyone else uses them a lot. The authors argue that this is because it’s embarrassing to admit that you use them a lot.)
These are great research tools.
A lot of students seem to use them very badly, for example to summarize articles instead of reading them. This is generally a route to a 3rd class mark.
Learn to use them effectively for your research. They are great at finding sources, generating (often quite bad but occasionally useful) objections to your arguments, helping you with proof reading, and in other ways.
Never send me an email or essay or any other thing written by an LLM. I will never speak to you again.
And if you write an essay using an LLM, this year I will also write to your director of studies, degree convenor and personal tutor advising them that they should mention in letters of reference that you have cheated.

How do I get a first?

Great question. And this is the right time to ask it. If you find yourself asking me this question in April, May or even June—it’s already over. But now is the prefect time to ask.
I am proud that a good number of students on my modules get their first firsts.

1. Let your light shine through.

There is no recipe. But there are some things you can do to avoid BLOCKING THE LIGHT.

a. Focus on precision—be a reliable source of knowledge.

b. Use relevant quotes with page numbers.

c. Cite few works, and only things cited in my notes.

And to be able to do these things you need to ...

2. Read, study, write.

Write dratfs and notes. Doesn’t matter what you write. Just write.

3. Use feedback early.

From people around you, and from me. In seminars and in my office hours.
But not in the last two weeks before the essay is due.
